Umbilical cord blood (UCB) used to be a biological waste product and has now become an important source for allogeneic and autologous stem cell transplantation.

Since the first cord blood transplantation, performed 23 years ago, more than 20.000 cord blood transplantations have been reported (source: BMDW). It has become a real survival chance for patients who can not find a matched bone marrow donor in time. To be available as a stem cell source, cord blood needs to be collected after birth and stored in specialized facilities (cord blood banks).

Expecting parents now have  the possibility to donate their baby´s cord blood free of charge through Vivocell Biosolutions.
